Common Magic
This series is unwritten; I don't really know what it will turn into. I'm collecting the ideas that seem to fit here so far.
I suspect it will end up being a contemporary fantasy series (not necessarily urban in location), possibly deconstructing some fairy tale tropes (such as fairy godmothers, instructions that must be disobeyed, etc.)
Here's what I have so far: a girl who starts her own hat shop, a girl who accidentally becomes a fairy godmother, urban equivalents to the rules of fairy tale journeys (as exemplified in Neil Gaiman's Instructions), and a girl who becomes violently ill from the most comforting smells I can imagine. My Tam Lin may also be part of this world. It may also be a modern USian version of the Practical Talents magic. Useful, huh? But my subconscious is coming up with new bits all the time -- I'm already itching to write these.
Let me know what you think.
Hats (working title)
Status: Two very broken early drafts written; back in the cooker for now, until I can solve a few problems
There's a girl with hats, but no plot yet. Therein lies the rub.
(Eventually, you will be able to Click here for more about this book and the process of writing it.)
Fairy Godmother book (not even a working title, really)
Status: Idea Stage (a few bits written, subconscious churning like mad)
This will probably be my next first draft, since my mind is busily kicking up odd bits of it. I wish I knew what the plot would be. (Very common refrain around here.)
(Eventually, you will be able to Click here for more about this book and the process of writing it.)
Perfume (working title)
Status: Idea Stage (unwritten)
All I have right now is a girl who throws up when she smells cookies baking. No idea yet why this is interesting or why it fits here. She's an interesting character, though, so that's good.
