Fairy Tales Uncovered
The Fairy Tales Uncovered series started with a sneaking suspicion I'd had that East of the Sun, West of the Moon was anything but a children's story. The more I dug, the more I was convinced -- this was dark stuff! Other stories turned up as well -- The Twelve Dancing Princesses, Tam Lin -- all wanted to be uncovered and made sense of. These are my attempts to find what lies beneath -- even though, in some cases, I've added layers on top of the originals.
I recognize that I'm hardly the first to realize this, but finding my own way through their dark woods has been an interesting challenge, and one that refused to leave until I'd finished with them.
Let me know what you think.
Of Slippers and Snakes, Or, How to Save Yourself
My dark Twelve Dancing Princesses. This one started with questions: why so many princesses? Why do they go down there, anyway? I'd read Anne Sexton's poem, and somehow it spoke more strongly to me than any of the retellings. And why were they all from the soldier's point of view?

Three Ells
My dark East of the Sun, West of the Moon (though not so dark as Of Slippers). This was the story that had been bothering me for years. Cupid and Psyche shed a lot of light on what was bothering me, but I'm still in the process of unravelling pretty much every relationship in the story, trying to make sense of it all.

Tam Lin uncovered (working title)
A friend of mine begged me to write a Tam Lin that really "got it" -- that Tam Lin is about being young, female, and certain you can do anything, no matter what anyone tells you. And you can, except...you better be as strong as Janet is, and as willing to fight.
