Practical Talents
The Practical Talents series is set in England's late Regency period (1818 for Glamour and Green Thumb; possibly a bit later for Spice) -- only here, magic exists a series of rare practical talents that seem to run in families. Individuals exist who can mold a silver teapot that will amplify the pourer's body heat to boil water, or paint larks who sing within the painting.
What interests me about writing this series (aside from the pure fun of the world!) is how elements that transcend class influence a fairly clear-cut social structure -- down the scale as well as up it. I suspect Florence Nightingale's classic Cassandra had something to do with that.
Let me know what you think.
Glamour
Status: Out with Beta Readers; final revisions next!
When Miss Annis Worthner receives five offers of marriage from fortune hunters the day after her father's death, it never occurs to her that it might be prudent to accept one.
By the time she learns that the money he left her has vanished, no one is proposing. Desperate to avoid genteel destitution, Annis disguises herself as a widowed dressmaker and attempts to earn back her money with her newly-found talent for sewing glamours: magical garments that can make the wearer the center of attention, or make one's eyes slide right over her.
Between cheating customers, stubborn magic, a handsome solicitor asking too many questions, and her aunt's air of financial doom, the life of a business woman is proving more difficult than Annis had thought possible.
A pity the English spies who employed her father haven't answered the letters she wrote, offering the use of her talent...
